This seminar will provide an introduction to ionising radiation, the hazards associated with it and their control.
Topics will include:

An introduction to the physics of ionising radiation

Sources of ionising radiation in the workplace

Principles and methods of radiation protection

A description of ionising radiation hazards and their measurement

Monitoring ionising radiation hazards in the workplace

Regulations, Standards and Codes of Practice
All the sessions will be designed to encourage questions and discussions on relevant topics.
PRESENTER:
Celia Hacker has worked for twenty years in the radiation protectione nvironment. Her experience includes working in operational health physics at the Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights, personal dosimetry, instrument calibration, emergency response planning, and managing both radiation protection and conventional OHS programs. She has worked with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in several countries, providing advice on setting up personal dosimetry systems and trainingnuclear industry personnel.
Her main area of expertise and interest is in developing and providing quality competency based training in radiation safety. During her time with ANSTO Celia led a team which developed a comprehensive radiation protection distance learning package for the IAEA. She has provided training in radiation safety for workers in a wide range of industries in Australia - from gold mines to paper mills. She has also worked with ANSTO teams developing and providing training for thesafety and security of radioactive sources in the Asia/Pacific Region.

This seminar is aimed at occupational hygienists and other Safety, Health and Environment professionals who work in areas where sources of ionising radiation (either X-rays or radioactive material) are used - or just want to enhance their ability to recognize and control ionising radiation hazards in the workplace.
