OUTLINE
Although asbestos is now essentially banned in Australia, asbestos containing materials have been used throughout industry for many decades and hence there is a large technical, political and legal legacy. This seminar will present an overview of the current state of knowledge and important occupational and environmental aspects of this issue.
The seminar will cover:

description of asbestos related diseases,
-
quantification of risks from asbestos exposure,
-
identification in bulk samples and air monitoring techniques,
-
discussion of control and removal programs and techniques,
-
understanding the approaches of removal contractors and consultants, and
- associated legislative and compensation requirements.
PRESENTERS
Alan Rogers has been a member of the AIOH since its inaugurationin 1980 and became a Fellow in 1993. He has a Master of Science in Occupational Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Alan has worked in the field of occupational hygiene for over 30 years with government and in the private sector. He currently runs his own consultancy and is recognised as a world authority on asbestos and mineral fibres.
Philip Hibbs has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne and attended the Deakin graduate course. He began his career in occupational hygiene in 1983 with the Occupational Health Division of the Health Commission of Victoria. Prior to this he worked in the building industry doing mainly small renovations and demolition work in residential and small commercial projects. He thus comes with a strong theoretical and practical background in the asbestos industry. Phil was with the HCOV for 18 months beforemoving into consulting, and in 1993, established his own consultingpractice.

This seminar is aimed at occupational hygienists and others who face the prospects of dealing with the social, political, technical, industrial relations and regulatory issues surrounding asbestos on their worksites.
