(i) Membership Renewals for Financial Year 2008/2009 - yes, its' that time again.
As most of you would be aware by now, membership renewal invoices for FY 08/09 have been distributed to (individual) SIA members. Thank you to those members who have renewed their commitment to the Institute by promptly paying their FY 08/09 subscriptions and returning the membership details form to enable the membership database to be updated, where required.
If you haven't received a renewal notice by the end of next week, please contact our Membership Services Co-ordinator Ms Nela Santos on 03 8336 1993 or via email nela@sia.org.au .
Please note that renewals for Corporate Partners are based upon 12 months membership from the date of joining and not on the financial year.

We need news items and your active participation in the member, public and special interest discussion forums of the website. With over 3,000 SIA members nationally, there must be at least 1,000 potential stories to share from the various industry sectors, e.g. mining, agriculture, transport, that demonstrate that there are definitely no short-cuts in safety.
(iii) Creating a Brand Identity for the SIA ~ new major project
One of the key objectives of the recently launched SIA 2008-2013 Strategic Plan is for the Institute to become a leading authority on OHS issues within Australia and internationally. The NBOM has supported the development of a new branding strategy to support this objective. The Institute is now looking to expand its role and partnership opportunities by engaging, supporting and influencing government, regulators, industry, its members, the media, and the wider community in a way which will advance health and safety issues and standards both within Australia and the international arena.
On behalf of the SIA National President, Dr Geoff Dell CFSIA, I am pleased to announce that WorkSafe Victoria will be the major sponsor of this project, which will be undertaken by consultants Campbell Design Group Pty Ltd and JD Communications.
The NBOM Executive plans to meet with Jennifer Dixon (JD Communications) and Peter Campbell (Campbell Design Group Pty Ltd) on 21 July to discuss the project scope and associated schedule and the formation of a Project Steering Committee. The project is scheduled to be conducted over a 9 month period from July 2008 - April 2009 and coincide with the SIA's 60th Anniversary in 2009.
It is important to understand prior to the conduct of such an important project, that a brand is not just a name and a logo. It is the visual and physical expression of how an organisation communicates and represents itself to its internal and external audiences. Similarly, positioning is more than coming up with a catchy strap line. It is the place an organisation holds in the minds of its audiences and is built on the sum total of people's experiences, perceptions, beliefs and feelings towards that organisation.
The project will comprise three Stages:
Stage 1 - "Discovery", will involve items such as an initial scoping study; branding workshops; review of branding and business intelligence;
Stage 2 - "Brand Identity & Development" will involve concept development, application design and documentation;
Stage 3 - "Implementation & Rollout" will involve developing a communications plan and materials; developing a launch strategy; and, subject to NBOM approval, a launch.
The development of a new identity and a communications plan will help the SIA, as part of the branding process, to:
- Articulate its brand attributes and values and provide a memorable and distinct identity that will clearly support the organisation's future strategic direction and provide a powerful platform on which to build its communication and business activities;
- Provide a visual identity that is clearly understood, valued and sought after by SIA's potential and existing stakeholders;
- Operationalise the SIA's strategic plan including its leadership role (both nationally and internationally), its products and services, and its benefits and successes through a strong and clear positioning;
- Build greater awareness and equity in the SIA brand, its role and achievements nationally as a leader and peak industry body for health and safety;
- Position itself as a trusted and credible source on health and safety information on issues to its peers, the industry, government, regulators, members and the wider Australian community;
- Inrease and expand its membership base and corporate partnership program to encourage closer collaborative initiatives and better sharing of resources, research, information and innovation; and
- Develop a strong marketing and communication culture to effectively promote its work, partnerships and products and services to a wider audience including youth.
